An Unexpected OpportunityÂ
The Komatsu project was initially awarded to another supplier based primarily on price considerations. However, the complexity of the glazing requirements led that supplier to withdraw. Trend was subsequently approached to take on the job, and despite not being the lowest bidder, their technical expertise and proven track record with Tomkins Commercial made them the preferred choice for this challenging project. This turn of events highlights Trendâs position in the market as a solutions provider capable of handling technically demanding projects.Â
Overcoming Complex Design ChallengesÂ
The most distinctive feature of the Komatsu Distribution Centre is its curved glass façade, which stands approximately 8.5 metres high with a 10 metre run. This required exceptional technical expertise to execute successfully. Rather than installing multiple smaller window sections between the structural steel, Trend created a continuous glazed façade for a seamless appearance.Â
Trendâs team had to design special brackets to mount the glazing system onto the steel frame, which allowed the use of thinner glass while still meeting all engineering requirements. The glass specification was another crucial element of the project. The team selected EVantage Superblue, a specialised glass that reduces glare while maintaining an upmarket appearance. This particular glass is not typically kept in stock, requiring special ordering and careful planning to ensure timely delivery.Â
Precise Installation and CoordinationÂ
The installation of the massive curved glass façade required meticulous planning and specialised equipment. Trend documented the entire process with time lapse photography, capturing the precision and care taken during this critical phase. The team developed a systematic approach to coordinate with multiple trades working simultaneously on the site.Â
The inside glazing also presented its own set of challenges. âInternally it became a bit of a challenge sometimes because we had to deliver the windows and they had to go inside the building, and then be lifted up with a crane inside to get them up onto the mezzanines,â explains Ron Kliendienst, Trendâs Technical Manager. This required careful synchronisation with other construction stages, including concrete pouring for the floors.Â
The projectâs scale was substantial, with Trend supplying and installing approximately 850 square metres of external glazing and 250 square metres of internal glazing. This extensive scope required careful coordination between the factory, delivery teams, and on site installers to keep the project on schedule.
A successful partnershipÂ
The Komatsu Distribution Centre was completed in time for the companyâs centenary celebrations, a critical deadline that added pressure to the project timeline. Despite these challenges, Trendâs team maintained their commitment to quality and service excellence.Â
Trendâs Commercial Manager, Subhash Saini, confirming, âWe have not been back to fix any sort of defects. The end product is still standing there without any problems.â The successful completion of this project strengthened Trendâs relationship with Tomkins Commercial, leading to additional projects with the builder. Â
The completed Komatsu Distribution Centre consolidated three other distribution centres into one major hub, making it a significant project for Komatsuâs Australian operations. The distinctive blue glass façade has become a defining feature of the building, creating a strong visual identity that aligns with Komatsuâs brand.  Â
âThey wanted a statement and we managed to do it on budget and in time,â Subhash reflects. The project demonstrates how Trendâs willingness to take on complex challenges, combined with their technical expertise and collaborative approach, results in successful outcomes for even the most demanding commercial projects.
