Project brief
The Amalfi project presented a design brief that called for a bold industrial aesthetic featuring extensive use of off-form concrete and feature stone elements. These material choices created specific technical requirements for the glazing integration.
Travis Rudken, Trend's Commercial Project Manager, explains the distinctive requirements: "They've gone for that very chic appearance with ultra black powder coat and grey glass to give it that really sharp, high end industrial feel. The brief on that job was working closely with quite a bit of off-form concrete, which is a finished concrete surface, so when they pour it, that's it." The concrete finish meant that waterproof membranes or sealants couldn't be used in visible areas, requiring absolute precision in positioning and alignment to achieve clean transitions between concrete and glazing elements.
Technical Precision and Planning
The project's success hinged on meticulous planning and execution, particularly around the integration of glazing elements with the off-form concrete and feature stone work. Trend's team had to account for the varying thickness of feature stone, which typically adds significant depth to wall finishes.
"We made some allowances for feature stone throughout the build," notes Travis. "The feature stone typically adds quite a bit of thickness to where things finish into windows, so we were very clear on the job planning to make sure that we were making the windows small enough in width and using a wider angle on those sides where the stone was, to ensure that when the stone finished into it, it wasn't finishing into a part of the window where it actually looks like a mistake."
This attention to detail reflects Trend's consultative approach to complex residential projects. Rather than simply supplying products to specified dimensions, their team actively collaborates with builders and architects to anticipate and resolve potential finishing issues before they become problems.
Complex Glass Installation
One of the project's most technically demanding aspects involved the installation of large fixed glass panels via a crane. The scale and weight of these panels meant that specialist lifting equipment had to be used, and careful coordination to access the site was required. "We had some large glass panels for fixed windows going to that job, so we used a crane with a vacuum lifter, spider lifter," explains Travis. "We actually lifted it up from the street all the way up and had to delicately place it down between scaffold because glass, particularly toughened glass or laminated glass, if you do touch any of the edges, it's pretty much game over."
The installation process included custom cut glass pieces with corner cutouts designed to fit around the off-form concrete features. This required precise site measuring, CAD drawing development, and coordination with glass suppliers to ensure perfect fit on installation day.
Project Coordination
Successfully executing such complex installations also required seamless coordination between all project stakeholders. This coordination was built on strong relationships established from the outset. Working with Black Developments and owner-developer Josh Di Carlo, Trend's team maintained clear communication protocols throughout the project.
Travis appreciates the value of a team that is in sync and communicating throughout a project saying, "When there's clear communication and builders know exactly what they want, it makes my job easier. We've done work for Josh before, so there's already a rapport that makes the process easier."
This collaborative approach extended to proactive problem identification and resolution. Trend's framework involves early identification of potential issues through detailed site consultation, followed by clear documentation of solutions and expectations. A prime example of this was evident in the finishing work, where the project required careful consideration of how different building elements would interact. The clients wanted near flush transitions between interior and exterior spaces, requiring precise coordination of sill heights with flooring contractors.
Travis's approach to managing these details demonstrates Trend's commitment to quality outcomes. "What I try to achieve is, if I'm going to see any issues with how things are going to be set up, any shortfalls that may occur, I try and lay it all out clearly, not just verbally on site, but also back up those thoughts and conversations in an email just to make sure everyone's on the same page." Where necessary, Trend also provides physical samples of sill sections, allowing builders and clients to visualise exactly how finished installations will appear. This hands on approach helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures client expectations are met.
Successful Delivery
The completed Amalfi residence stands as a testament to the strength of collaborative project management and technical expertise. Owner-developer Josh expressed his satisfaction with the finished home saying, “Once again, appreciate the great job you guys did.” The completed project adds to Bulimba’s reputation as a sought after location for high end architectural homes.
The project demonstrates how Trend's combination of manufacturing capability, installation expertise, and collaborative project management delivers exceptional results for high end residential construction. By anticipating challenges, maintaining clear communication, and focusing on precise execution, Trend continues to set new standards in the glazing industry.
