Why choose timber windows and doors?

Timber adds warmth, texture and tactility to a home and works perfectly with a wide range of styles from timeless classic renovations to even the most contemporary new builds. Timber’s natural insulating properties make it one of the most energy efficient window and door frame available, ensuring year-round comfort.

WHAT TIMBER SPECIES DOES TREND OFFER?

The Botanica timber series is available in either cedar or meranti. Botanica is constructed from engineered timber to minimise the effects of sun and moisture on the product over time and both cedar and meranti are sustainably sourced, with a traceable chain of custody.

What is the difference between Western Red Cedar and Meranti Timbers?

The Botanica timber series is available in either cedar or meranti.

Western Red Cedar is renowned for its natural beauty and colour variation. It works well indoors and outdoors, and achieves any look from natural and rustic to clean and contemporary. It also resists warping, cupping, twisting, rot, and termites. To enhance cedar's grain and colour it is most commonly stained, however it is possible to achieve a painted finish. Western Red Cedar is an environmentally friendly choice, as it’s sourced from the world’s most sustainably managed forests.

Meranti is of medium hardness, is easily handled and machined, and is very reasonably priced. It has a uniformly straight grain with few variations and is resistant to warping, cupping and twisting. Meranti readily accepts both stain and paint finishes. Meranti is widely used for decorative applications, including windows, doors, moulding and skirtings. The Meranti timber used in the Botanica range is sustainably sourced with a traceable chain of custody.

IS YOUR TIMBER SOURCED SUSTAINABLY?

Trend's commitment to producing sustainable, high-performing solutions for any home or building is evident through its range of Botanica timber windows and doors. Selecting only timber grown and harvested under the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes demonstrates how we recognise the value of investing in sound sustainable materials sourcing.

Sustainably managed and sourced timber provides benefits beyond framing the outside to the inside of a building. During the growing of timber, carbon is absorbed and stored in the timber, unlike conventional manufactured windows and doors that emit carbon during their manufacture.

The management of growing and harvesting of timber provides jobs that can, in turn, provide economic benefits to the wider community where they are grown and have little to no adverse environmental implications when grown under the FSC or PEFC stewardship.

Passive Design

Orientation & Window Placement

So you’ve locked in your ideal site location and you’re ready to draw up plans. This is one of the most enjoyable times when building a home, as you’ll get to choose where your ideal master suite will be and think about the proportions of your living spaces. It’s also the time to start considering your property orientation and the ideal placement for windows. The direction your home faces and its position on your site can do a lot of the heavy lifting for your passive design elements. Orientation should consider the sun’s path in summer and winter and the direction of cool breezes and hot winds.

For cooler climates that require heating, north-west orientation is preferable. It maximises the amount of afternoon sunlight and captures the flow of warm breezes, which reduces the need for artificial heating. For those in warm climates, north-east orientation captures soft natural light and the flow of cool breezes. This orientation will help you enjoy your morning rays while shielding you from the harsher afternoon sun.

If your home is already established, window placement can still play a part in your renovations. Reconfiguring your windows can breathe new life into spaces and boost efficiency. Using casement or louvre windows – like Trend’s Breezway Louvre or Quantum Casement windows – encourages a relaxed, laid-back feel and helps to promote cross-ventilation. In turn, this encourages gentle breezes.
